Today's Law is # 11

Law 11
Learn to Keep People Dependent on You

To maintain your independence you must always be needed and wanted. The more you are relied on, the more freedom you have. Make people depend on you for their happiness and prosperity and you have nothing to fear. Never teach them enough so that they can do without you.

Carnival Pics

Yesssss, I had the stomach out and all. I still got a few crunches left to do (lol)........but I have come such a long way. It felt good to even "BE" in a two piece, let alone dance down the road in one!

The Chutney Girls (from left to right): Me, Shonda (my cousin), Sharon (my aunt), and Beth (my cousin/roomate).

And another one.......

Gotta have the headshot too, lol!

By the way, you catch me live in this same costume in about two weeks for the Baltimore Carnival. I'm gonna be sore as all hell, but once again, that's the price you pay.......cause I know right now, I'm sore and sun-burned. BUT, it was all very worth it.

I hope you enjoyed the photos. Thanks again for tuning in!

Pain and Price of Beauty

Ladies you are gonna feel me on this one...........and Fellas, after this post you should have a greater appreciation for the Ladies, and what we have to go through to look 'beautiful'. Before all the feminists start burnin' bras and sendin' me hate emails and whatnot, LOL.......I am not suggesting that only women who do the following are beautiful. Every woman is beautiful in her own right!

Ok........those who tune in regularly know that I am 'Playing Mass' in the DC West Indian Carnival tomorrow. Here again is my wonderfully designed costume:

I picked up the costume last night and........man-o-man, the girl looks Goooooooood in it!

In preparation for tomorrow, I got WAXED today. When I say WAXED............I mean: Full Legs, Bikini, and BROWS. This was my first time getting the Bikini wax and Oh My GOD, that shit hurt! Fellas you have no idea what we go through to get the stray hairs gone.............so I hope my pain and suffering is appreciated. On the bright side though..........my skin is so smoooooooth! LOL

I do crazy things, but they usually pay off!

And yesterday was no exception! Pull up a chair and relax while I share my experience with you.

I was driving home from work, and let me be perfectly honest; I do not listen to the radio 'like that'. So when I hear something on a radio broadcast.......I believe it was meant for me to hear it! I happened to be switching cd's (once you take a cd out, the radio automatically comes on) and 92Q's Lonnie announces that Method Man

Yes this fine piece of man, was in Maryland, in the 92Q studio..........within my reach!

No I wasn't on no groupie status (eventhough he definitely could get it)....I am working on a new song where the producer sampled Meth's voice for the hook. So as soon as I heard he was in the studio, I felt like I needed to go see him, but for what? At that exact time, I didn't know. I continued to drive home (which is in the complete opposite direction of the radio station), when Method Man says : "If I'ma give it to ya, I'ma give it to ya RAW". BTW, that is what my hook says......uh-oh, now you got an EXCLUSIVE! But anyway, I swear at that exact moment, it was if GOD herself said "Go to the station, let him hear the song, see if he'll get on it........NOW!!!!" But I still doubted myself, and called Niige (the producer) and told him what Meth said, he instantly replied "You should go up there and see if he'll give you a 16 for the joint." It was almost 6pm, and I had to record at 8, so being late was inevitable if I went to the station........Niige was like "Go, Mike will understand after you tell him whats up.........just call and tell him you'll be late!" So I switched directions on the road, and headed up to 92Q to meet Mr. Tical himself. On my way to the station, I got a call from my sis, B-Fly. This girl is a trip yall.....we shared a quick laugh, she sent me some positive energy, and we said we'd connect later (well it's later B, lol).

I got up there, and I felt like everyone was staring at me, thinking "What the hell is she doing here?" I called my BF....we chatted for a second, he gave me some ideas of what to say when I met Meth, and we hung up. An hour went by........I swear this hour felt like 2 days. I pulled out my sidekick and was typing an email to let Mike Mac know I'd be late for my session.....just as I was about to press send, Mike calls me. We chat for a few, he laughs cuz I tell him I can't tell him why I'm late cuz I don't wanna jinx anything, he laughs and proceeds to go over what we're supposed to work on when I get to the studio. While talking to Mike, I notice a pretty handsome guy going into the truck I 'suspected' was Method man's. He pulls out a few shirts, looks them over, puts one on....and proceeds to chill outside. I hang up with Mike and decide to put on the ShellBe charm, lol. I go over to him and say "Wear's my shirt?" He blushes and says "If I'd have known you'd have wanted one, I would've brought another one!" I do this lil giggle thing I do.........when I do what I do! LOL....... and then he asks me what I'm doing up here. I tell him "I'm waiting for Method Man", which looking back in retrospect seemed very groupie-ish...........then I tell him my story about how I heard Meth on the radio station and decided to come up there and give him a copy of my song and get a 16 from him. The dude instantly laughs and says "shorty most people would ask for a drop or an intro, you asking for a 16, thats Gangsta", I said something slick like "Hey, why cheat myself". Then here comes the bullshit : "So what you a singer?"...........Come on man, do I like that prissy, lol..........but anyway, I tell him I rap, he says he doesn't believe me. I invite him to hear the song, so he follows me to the car, listens to the song..and the entire time his head is on the 'Ogun-headnod-tip' (for those that haven't witnessed that, it is a rediculously passionate and very involved nod...........LOL). He tells me I'm hot, and he digs my style........I say "Thanks", thinking this whole time, "WHO THE HELL IS THIS?" , but I swear you gotta treat everybody nice (and most importantly, be yourself), cuz you never know.

I know yall are probably like OK ShellBe get to it.....did you meet Meth?
HELL TO THE YES I DID!!!

He came out of the studio, and looked over at my car like he was waiting for me. I grabbed my cd, and jumped out of the car and walked over to him. He extended his hand, I shook it and introduced myself. Then his homeboy, yes the dude who was chattin' it up with me. Runs out the door and says :"That's Shell-Be-RAW, yo!" Then Meth says : "So where's the song?" I gave him the cd, and he says "So the hook is.........'If ya give it to me, yeah, give it to me RAW' right?" I almost fainted......then his people started grabbin' him tellin' him that they are running late. So I said my goodbyes, and he told me he was going to listen to the song as soon as he got into the truck. His homeboy gave me the thumbs up, and said bye.

I feel really accomplished.....I set out to do something, and I did it. There is soooo much more to the story, but I didn't want to type your head opff so I tried to keep it to the most important stuff. But the bottom line is.......if nothing else, I got to meet Method Man, and actually put my music into his hand!

Either people are calling in or.....

it's just OUR time to get some shine. Hell I don't care what it is......cuz I'm getting some spins on 92Q. On rap attack, the morning show, and in the various mixes.

Let me share the 'B-More Shit' All-Star Remix story with yall:

My BF, Ogun called me and told me he wanted to Remix the "New York Shit" song. He rattled off some names of MCs he was going to ask to be on the song (needless to say, my name was NOT amongst that list). He then reached out to these MCs, some of which didn't even return his calls/emails. But I guess that's neither here nor there, right? Anyway, I am usually always in the studio when he records so I witnessed the recording of the verses from Tim Trees, Clayway, and COMP. On the cut-off day......a certain MC couldn't come through due to serious family issues, and two other MCs couldn't be reached. After his frantic phone calls to other MCs, Ogun decided he would just do another verse. I ever so politely offer my MCing services..........lol, he says something like " Yeah, that'll be slick!" (actually that sounds more like something I'd say, lol, but you get the point, he was diggin' the idea!) We went over my verse, he was feeling it; then we made a bar-run, during which I went over my verse to get the 'flow' down...... now it was time to record. Keep in mind this all happened in the timespan of like 15-20 minutes.

When it was time for me to go into the booth, there was some friction in the air........certain people who shall remain nameless didn't think it was a good idea to put me on the song. They had 2 'good' reasons:
1.) She's a chick, and this ain't really a 'chick' song..............whatever the hell that means :0
AND
2.) She ain't from Baltimore. :(

As for reason #1, pardon my francais but : "N*gga PLEASE"

As for reason #2, this is true. I was not born or raised here in general, as a person.......but as an MC, I was born and raised in B-More. I claim both cities: Boston and Baltimore. I hope no one takes offense to me being on the song, if they do..........thats too fuck*n bad though. No sah, but seriously, I've worked hard to build a name for myself here. AND I won't appologize for it either! HAAAA! And if all other reasoning fails......like Ogun said, "If anyone got something to say.....shit, you're on the song cuz it's one of the perks of being MY bestfriend"....... lol, I ain't mad at that!

Either way, I shared all this to say.............GOD works in mysterious ways, so ALWAYS be ready!

Today's Law is # 9

At the request of my sister in rhyme (what up B-Fly)I am bringing back the 48 Laws. This book and these principles help me through life........so I'm hoping that in some way, by me sharing them.....they can someone else's life.

So here it goes:

Law 9
Win through your Actions, Never through Argument
Any momentary triumph you think gained through argument is really a Pyrrhic victory: The resentment and ill will you stir up is stronger and lasts longer than any momentary change of opinion. It is much more powerful to get others to agree with you through your actions, without saying a word. Demonstrate, do not explicate.

What's your NEXT move?

I'm probably gonna get frowned at for making this comment but hey......I have come to learn that most artists don't think 'proactively', they don't have their next move lined up, and/or planned out. They think that being played on the radio is the key to their success; the end all, be all.......and since everyone wants to use the South as an example; Ask all the Southern artists how long their song(s) have been on the radio (in heavey rotation for that matter), before they got their ish to 'pop'?

I myself was guilty of this.......when I went up to 92Q to get "RAW" played. Now if they would have put it into rotation......what did I have lined up for after that? What was my plan of action? Nothing...let's say "RAW" (Click here to HEAR my song "RAW") became a HIT,(and I use this term very loosely and figuratively.......because what is a HIT exactly? But that discussion could be a whole other post!)Where is my follow up record? Where is my marketing/promotional budget? Hell, where is my complete (or close to complete) album? And the list goes on..........as Mike Mac would say: "Bottom line is....." I was NOT ready!

Honestly, that situation made me fall back and evaluate my approach......ENTIRELY!!!

So...................with all that being said, just beacuse I'm not on the scene like I used to be; don't think I'm falling off. I'm just changing/re-evaluating my approach, and reformatting my game plan. I didn't come to be a bench-warmer, or be the player with the most potential......I came to be the STAR player in the starting line-up.

Watch out now!

All about me......

Lately I have been neglecting my faithful readers :) who visit my Blog to read my ramblings about the goings-on in my life/career...............so I figured I'd take the time today to play catch up, and vent actually, LOL.

Musically:
*I am now in a new situation/partnership that allows me to record way more frequently then I was able to before. I am also in the position to acquire beats of a better quality (Not that I wasn't offered any good beats before.............but it is an understatement when people say "You get EXACTLY what you pay for.") Without the stress of studio-time and/or beats..........I am way more free to just worry about making hot songs, and keeping my creative juices flowing.
*I have 2 extremely 'flamin' songs that I am very proud of right now........I can't wait till the public gets a chance to hear my growth on these songs. My bars are sufficiently improving, no bullshit!
*The 'B-More Shit' All-Star Remix (of which I am featured on) has been added to a few mixtapes, been played in a few B-More clubs, and has even gotten some more spins on 92Q.
*I spoke to Yung Joc on the phone.........possibly, there will be more details about this one later!

Personally:
*I have absolutely NO personal life! My music is my life......but honestly it'll be more rewarding to have a personal life when I can afford to do whatever the hell I feel like doing! Feel me?

Miscellaneous:
* My bestfriend snitched on me last night.......can't tell you what about, but I had to put him on blast. LOL. So............ we're even now, "OK, Kev???"
*I have been informed that there is a ShellBe RAW body double out there, anyone with further information on this 'suspect' should report it to the proper authorities..............ME. I sincerely hope that this is not a case of 'SWAGGER-JACKIN'............things that make you go "hhhhhmmmmmmmm???"

Thanks for tuning in folks!
Remember: "Always keep it RAW ...........I Do!!!"

Don't forget to make me a friend, leave me a comment, or visit my page and silently hate....lol, no sah, come 'polly' wit me here at: ShellBe RAW's Official Myspace Page
